One observes another individual acting in a way that is egotistical, and thinks to himself that if he were in the same situation he would somehow avoid the egoism and act humbly. Paradoxically, this observer becomes puffed up with a sense of self-righteousness (inner egoism) regarding the very fact that he deems himself capable of acting without pride. In this way, the thought about the ability to negate the ego, creates an even more subversive form of it. Oh, if only we could turn this turning in into itself!
