“A talking raccoon and a seven foot tree monster walk into a bar…” As of a few months ago, if you knew which characters that joke was referring to, then you were a bigger geek than even I. Marvel’s latest addition to their ever expanding cinematic universe is based on source material that almost no one read or even cared about. But in my opinion, that’s all about to change.
Guardians of the Galaxy seems to get some inspiration from all those ’80s and ’90s sports movies where a bunch of nobodies and misfits team up to overcome the impossible odds stacked against them. Except this time, it’s in SPAAAAACCCEEE!!!
The movie’s main characters are just as strange as the universe they live in. We are first introduced to Peter Jason Quill, AKA “Starlord”. Without spoiling anything, I’ll only say that Peter is trying to steal an artifact, of which he knows nothing about, and intends to sell it. Eventually, this leads to him running into my personal two favorite characters: Rocket and Groot. They’re the aforementioned talking raccoon and tree monster. They also happen to be bounty hunters that are after Quill. But don’t relax just yet! An assassin named Gamora, an adopted daughter of “The mad titan, Thanos” wants to kill Starlord so she can get the artifact he stole earlier (Thanos was the purple guy in the end credits scene for The Avengers. And, if you’re a good Marvel fan, you know he MUST have big plans). There’s also Drax, a warrior who wants revenge on the villain of the film, “Ronan the Accuser” for the death of his family.
A number of unfortunate circumstances occur to the point where the fate of the entire universe rests on these misfits shoulders.
Guardians of the Galaxy does what a LOT of movies that are released these days seem to forget to do: It makes it so the viewer is having fun watching it. The film accomplishes this by having an extremely good sense of humor from the ever immortal quote, “I am Groot,” to the fact that Drax’s species only understands things in a literal sense. However, it’s not all laughs in this movie. There’s plenty of fulfilling action scenes, as well as some deeply emotional moments. One of the best things about Guardians of the Galaxy is that the movie succeeds in being so well-rounded this without being cliche.
The only bad part is that you’ll want to see it so many times, that you will have to open another mortgage on your home.
The Verdict: Marvel took a gigantic risk by releasing this movie, and it made $94 million on its opening weekend! If this review and that little statistic don’t convince you, than nothing will.
